In the quest for a pest-free kitchen, many of us have resorted to various methods, ranging from chemical sprays to natural remedies. While chemical solutions can be effective, they often come with a host of health concerns and environmental impacts. This led me to explore natural alternatives, and that’s how I stumbled upon peppermint oil. Known for its fresh scent and numerous household uses, peppermint oil has been touted as a natural pest deterrent.

Determined to test its efficacy, I embarked on a little experiment: placing peppermint oil-soaked cotton balls under my oven and refrigerator for ten nights. This article chronicles my journey, detailing the process, the changes I observed, and whether this natural solution holds up against the more conventional pest control methods.

1. Why I Turned To Peppermint Oil As A Natural Pest Deterrent

The decision to use peppermint oil was primarily driven by my desire to avoid harsh chemicals in my home. Peppermint oil is known for its pungent aroma, which is said to repel a variety of pests, including ants, spiders, and mice. The menthol in peppermint oil is believed to be particularly effective, as it overwhelms the sensitive olfactory senses of these pests.

According to various sources, a few drops of peppermint oil can go a long way. For my experiment, I used 100% pure peppermint essential oil, ensuring that the scent was potent enough to have an effect. I was intrigued by the idea that something so simple and natural could potentially replace the need for more aggressive pest control measures.

2. How I Prepared The Peppermint-Soaked Cotton Balls

Preparing the peppermint-soaked cotton balls was straightforward. I used a small glass bowl to mix the solution, combining about 10 drops of peppermint oil with two tablespoons of water. This dilution was necessary to avoid any potential staining or damage to surfaces.

I then took regular cotton balls and soaked them in the mixture for a few minutes to ensure they were thoroughly saturated. Once ready, I placed the cotton balls strategically under the oven and refrigerator, areas known for being pest hotspots. I used a total of six cotton balls, three for each appliance, spacing them out to maximize coverage.

3. Night 1–2: The Immediate Changes I Noticed In My Kitchen

On the first night, the most noticeable change was the refreshing scent of peppermint that filled the kitchen. It was a pleasant departure from the usual cooking and food-related odors. The scent was strong but not overwhelming, creating an inviting atmosphere.

In terms of pest activity, I didn’t notice any immediate changes. However, I was aware that it might take a couple of days for the effects to become apparent. I remained vigilant, checking the usual areas where I had previously spotted ants and roaches.

4. Night 3–4: What Happened To Ants, Roaches, And Other Crawlers

By the third night, I began to notice a decrease in pest activity. The usual trail of ants that would occasionally venture from under the refrigerator was no longer present. It seemed as though the peppermint oil was beginning to take effect, acting as a deterrent for these unwanted visitors.

As for roaches, I did spot a couple of them, but they were fewer in number and appeared less active. This gave me hope that the peppermint oil was indeed disrupting their usual patterns and making my kitchen a less hospitable environment for them.
